The Sunset Hour
It is the sunset hour that calls
In gentle wind-whispered words
that all my springs, summers, winters and falls
Have taken that southward flight of birds
Leaving me to face that evening star
Dimly appearing as the day fades
Beckoning me to a journey far
From the sunlight to evening shades.
Wind- whispered words from a distant shore
grow louder with the impending dark
The rising sun I will see no more
As on this journey I now embark.

The farmer trudges with heavy steps homeward;
The sweat stained laborer ceases to strain;
The incautious youth to the dark is lured
Where strength and speed are all in vain;
And I, too, have put my labors to rest
As I turn to face the darkening west.
All who have come before must pass this way
At the sunset of the final day.
Wind-whispered words from a distant shore
grow louder with the impending dark
The rising sun I will see no more
As on this journey I now embark.

I turn my face toward the gentle rain
And the wind-whispered words in soft refrain
Crescendo now to a deafening roar -
It is time to go to the distant shore.
